Sometimes the best Holiday gifts really do come in small packages! Understanding how to care for and protect your new jewelry can make a world of difference in ensuring its beauty lasts for generations to come. Here are some tips to help you care for your treasured jewelry.
Keep Your Jewelry Away from Chemicals
Exposure to chemicals can discolor precious metals. Even personal beauty substances, such as hairspray, lotion and sunscreen contain chemicals that can permanently damage delicate or porous gems (e.g., pearls and turquoise). Remove your jewelry before using household cleaners, diving into a chlorinated pool, and putting on skin care products.
Don’t Wear Your Jewelry While Playing Sports
There is a very real possibility that you can damage your ring, bracelet or necklace during times of intense exercise, such as lifting weights and/or playing sports. These activities can cause the bottom of a ring to bend, loosen any set gemstones, and scratch or dull the precious metal. Jewelry should be taken off before working out, and stored in a safe, secure place.
Safely and Securely Store Your Jewelry
Fine jewelry should never be tossed in a drawer. Ensuring its longevity requires delicate care. When not wearing your jewelry, store separately in a clean place to avoid pieces rubbing together, which can cause scratches and dulling. Most jewelry pieces come in a box or pouch from the store (you can also ask your jeweler). This is the perfect place to keep them when not being worn.
Jewelry boxes featuring independent slots for rings and posts for hanging necklaces are also ideal. Sterling silver should be kept in an anti-tarnish bag or cloth. Store delicate and porous jewels separately as well. Because pearls and opals draw moisture from the air, storing them in a dry place can do more harm than good. Avoid removing your jewelry while near a sink or tub; it can easily slip down the drain.
