January is the first month of a new year and, for many, new goals. With the “…power to bring the wearer good health, wealth, and happiness,” garnet can help you stay focused, so you can achieve whatever you put your mind to in 2020, (Gemological Institute of America). Garnet is also suitable for a variety of jewelry designs. Need another reason to consult a custom jewelry store about the gemstone garnet? Garnet is the birthstone for January as well as a traditional gift for your and your significant other’s second anniversary.
Garnet’s Origins & Properties
*nbsp;
Garnets are available in a rainbow of colors, including a vibrant red and a bright green, which can be found in various areas of the world. The latter, however, is a variety of garnet called tsavorites. Any color aside from red has a different mineral composition than traditional garnet so, naturally, they will have distinct names.
Garnets have been coveted throughout history for possessing certain properties that can benefit the wearer’s well-being. According to the Gemological Institute of America, this includes “…eliminating negative feelings (depression, guilt) and instilling greater self-confidence and mental clarity to promote creative thinking and peace of mind.”
Garnet Design & Care
The January birthstone “ranges between 6.5 and 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness,” according to GIA, and is thus suitable for a variety of pieces. White gold and platinum are excellent metal options for the garnet family of gemstones, as they will allow flawless stones to sparkle. Garnets can be designed as a solitaire or with side stones, like diamonds, which will accentuate the center stone.
The safest way to clean a garnet is with warm soapy water and a soft-bristled toothbrush. You’ll want to do this over a bowl to avoid losing the piece. Ultrasonic machines should only be used if the stone is free of fractures. When not wearing your jewelry, store in a muslin bag or separate compartment of your jewelry box, as this will prevent harder stones from rubbing against and scratching garnet.
