Overview
Named for the sea, aquamarine’s alluring hue, which ranges from the palest blue to the darkest blue-green invokes a sense of serenity. It is a popular stone for engagement ring, wedding ring, tennis bracelet, and pendant settings and looks good in most any metal type. Although, this gemstone is primarily mined in Brazil, it can also be found in other parts of the world. In addition to being one of the March birthstones – the other is bloodstone – it is also used to celebrate 19th wedding anniversaries.
Meaning
Derived from the Latin words “aqua,” meaning water and “marina,” meaning sea this gemstone was believed to calm waters as well as guarantee a safe voyage for sailors. It has been said that this gemstone gives the wearer protection against foes in battle or litigation. It is also thought to enhance the happiness of marriages. Additionally, its cool, tranquil color is said to enhance the health of the individual lucky enough to wear it.
The 4Cs of Aquamarine
As with diamonds, the quality of aquamarine is judged on the 4Cs of quality: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Also like diamonds, which of the 4Cs is most important is completely subjective; meaning that it is based on personal preference. According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the following characteristics determine value:
Color: Moderately strong dark blue to slightly greenish blue color is preferable.
Clarity: No inclusions should be visible under 10x magnification.
Cut: A well-cut gemstone shows brilliance.
Carat Weight: Sizes vary from very small to very large.
Caring for Aquamarines
These gemstones possess a score of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs (hardiness) scale, meaning that they are durable enough to be worn as jewelry, but that proper care should be taken to prevent damage. Consider removing the jewelry piece and placing in a microfiber jeweler’s bag during vigorous exercise to ensure its protection. Heat exposure is not recommended. To clean, use warm soapy water, rinsing thoroughly. Cleaning by ultrasonic and steam cleaners is generally safe if no inclusions or fractures are present.
