Share the love this Mother’s Day! Mother’s Day is almost here and, this year, spending is expected to reach a record $25 billion. That’s according to the National Retail Federation’s “annual Mother’s Day survey.” The survey highlights thoughtful gifts for mom’s in ten categories – not counting greeting cards – including flowers, jewelry, gift cards/certificates, personal service, and household or gardening tools.
Below, we’ve rounded up some gift ideas from the NRF survey, so you can share the love this Mother’s Day.
The Origins of Mother’s Day
The 1908 brainchild of Anna Jarvis, Mother’s Day occurs annually on Sunday, May 12. Six years later and it became an official holiday that adults and children use to commemorate their mothers or other women in their lives. However, the origins of Mother’s Day date back to the nineteenth-century when Jarvis’s mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, organized various Mother’s Day activities and clubs. The complete history of the holiday can be read about on the History website at www.history.com.
Ideas to Share the Love
Flowers
When in doubt, you can order a Mother Day’s bouquet, and have it delivered straight to her door from several local flower shops. Many even offer same-day delivery since holidays have a way of sneaking up on people. Popular choices for mom include roses, lilies, orchids, tulips, and peonies. You can also select an arrangement with a variety of her favorite flowers. Don’t forget to write a thoughtful message on the included card.
Jewelry
Mom will love personalized jewelry. Select from rings, necklaces, and other beautiful designer jewelry types to create a sentimental keepsake that represents your family. You can choose from a variety of precious metals and birthstones (from January to December: garnet, amethyst, aquamarine, diamond, emerald, pearl, ruby, peridot, sapphire, opal, citrine, and topaz). Many jewelry types can be engraved as well.
Gift Cards
Is mom a coffee lover? Has she been hinting at trying that new restaurant that just opened down the street? Maybe she has an upcoming trip planned? Why not gift her with something incredibly useful? Gift cards! There are gift cards for everything, including hot destinations, coffee shops, movie theaters, and restaurants. You can order gift cards online to be delivered to her or at most any retailer in the Valley.
Personal Service
It’s not a pair of diamond studs, but it just may be the next best thing, especially for stay-at-home, working or new moms. About 25 percent of those polled in the NRF survey plan to gift mom with a personal service such as cleaning, cooking, or a much-needed massage. Other personal service favorites include home organization, pet grooming/sitting, fitness training, grocery shopping and delivery, etc.
Household or Gardening Tools
For a gift that’s a surefire hit this Mother’s Day, look no further than an Instant Pot, which does the job of seven different kitchen appliances (i.e., pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, vegetable steamer, sauté/browning pan, and warming pot). If mom likes spending more time in the garden than the kitchen, another solid pick is a garden tote, filled to the brim with useful gardening tools (e.g., gloves, scissors, gardening spade, etc.).
